Insulation Requirements

• A standard paper faced insulation can be used in the joist cavity.

• Install the insulation tight against the subﬂoor to minimize any

convective losses that may be generated.

• The insulation should be a minimum of 3-1/2" (88.9 mm), or R-13,

berglassbattwhentheradiantﬂoorisinstalledoveraheatedspace,

such as a basement. 5-1/2"(139.7 mm), or R-19, batt (or thicker,

depending on the climate) should be used when the area below the

radiant ﬂoor is unheated or exposed to the elements.

Thin Slab with Sleepers

• Wooden sleepers are sometimes installed within a thin slab

application to allow for points of attachment for hardwood or other

ﬂoor coverings.

Please note:

In a thin slab application,

typically the tubing will be

run through doorways and

other openings rather than

directly through walls.
